Bike Rental Service

Designing how Airbnb could integrate bike rental into its ecosystem.
Overview & Problem.

Airbnb is exploring opportunities beyond accommodation, expanding its offering into mobility experiences. This project focuses on how bike rental could be integrated into the platform.

Renting a bike in a new city often requires switching between multiple apps, locations and payment systems. This fragmented experience interrupts the flow of exploration and limits spontaneity while travelling.

Objetives.
  • Integrate bike rental into Airbnb as an extension of the travel experience

  • Make bike availability easy to find and assess in real time

  • Support spontaneous decisions by showing nearby bikes and suggested routes

My role.

• Led the end-to-end design process, from research (Benchmarking, desk research and in-depth interviews), interaction design to final prototype
• Defined the sitemap and user flows based on key insights
• Designed the interface, components and interaction patterns

Insights.

Research highlighted four behaviours that shaped the experience:

  • Users seek autonomy, but still need a sense of security.

They want control over the experience, but still need to feel confident before making a decision

  • Friction in the process reduces conversions.

If the process feels long or complicated, users are less likely to rent a bike

  • Speed and clarity influence decisions.
Users decide quickly when information is easy to scan and compare

  • Trust signals influence choice.
Users rely on ratings and usage to feel confident choosing a bike

Solution.

A location-based bike rental system integrated into Airbnb, allowing users to discover, book and unlock bikes instantly.

Designed to reduce friction, support quick, on-the-go decisions, and provide a reliable rental experience.

UI Design.
  • Discover & decide.

Users need quick, scannable information, so nearby bikes and availability are shown directly on the map, enabling fast, in-context decisions. Suggested routes also help users quickly decide where to go and explore the city more easily.

  • Select & book.

When the process feels long, users are less likely to continue. The simplified booking flow allows users to quickly choose duration and confirm rental without unnecessary steps.

  • Unlock & ride.

Bikes can be unlocked instantly via QR, reducing friction between decision and action.
